Indoor Residential Work
Even without a formal OSHA inspector present, cutting tile dry indoors without dust control fills enclosed spaces with fine silica particles that stay airborne for hours. Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need dust collection if I'm only making a few cuts?
Yes — silica exposure is cumulative over a career. A few cuts per day over months or years adds up. The OSHA Action Level is based on an 8-hour TWA, but even short exposures to high concentrations contribute to lifetime dose.
Can I just wear a dust mask instead of using a shroud?
A dust mask alone is not sufficient for silica. OSHA requires an N95 respirator at minimum — and even that is a last-resort control, not a substitute for engineering controls like dust collection. Shroud + vacuum first, respirator as additional protection.
Does a regular shop vac work?
A standard shop vac is better than nothing, but a HEPA-filtered vacuum is required for OSHA compliance. Non-HEPA vacuums can re-circulate fine silica particles back into the air.
What about wet cutting — do I still need dust control?
