How to Finish Inside Radii in Porcelain Tile Cutouts

A clean porcelain cutout isn’t finished when the initial cutting is done. Small edge imperfections can remain, especially around inside curves where the finished shape needs to look consistent.

For fabricators making porcelain flush buttons, inspection hatches, and other detailed pieces, radius finishing is a separate step worth planning.

The DISTAR RadiusMILL R3, R6, R12 set is designed for that final grinding stage. Its three fine-diamond-coated mills help refine the radius after cutting, rather than replacing the initial cutting process.

What does radius finishing do?

After cutting a radius with a diamond wire, minor imperfections may remain along the edge. RadiusMILL mills are designed to refine that edge into a smooth, clean curve.

Think of the initial cut as establishing the opening and final grinding as refining its shape and finish. Keeping those stages separate helps set realistic expectations for the tool.

Choosing between R3, R6, and R12

The set includes three radius sizes: 3, 6, and 12 mm. Select the size that matches the specified radius of the finished piece.

Radius and diameter aren’t the same measurement. R3 means a 3 mm radius, not a 3 mm diameter. When working from a drawing or template, check which measurement is specified before choosing a mill.

Don’t choose a radius simply because it looks close. The required opening and component dimensions should guide the selection.

Plan the finishing stage

  1. Confirm the required finished radius from the drawing or template.
  2. Complete the initial cut. RadiusMILL is intended for final grinding of the radius.
  3. Inspect the cut edge and identify the minor imperfections that need refining.
  4. Choose the matching R3, R6, or R12 mill.
  5. Perform final grinding with water cooling, following the manufacturer’s instructions for the mill and the tool driving it.
  6. Inspect the finished curve and check it against the intended dimensions.

Water cooling is required

RadiusMILL requires water cooling during operation. The product information specifies that minimal water cooling is needed, but it does not provide a flow rate.

Use the manufacturer’s prescribed cooling arrangement and confirm that the driving tool is suitable for the intended water-cooled operation. Don’t assume that any rotary tool can be used safely with water.

What the 15 mm working length means

Each mill has a 15 mm working length, allowing the set to process porcelain gres of various thicknesses.

Working length is not automatically a maximum approved material thickness. Confirm the manufacturer’s guidance for your workpiece and setup before selecting the tool.

Where RadiusMILL fits

RadiusMILL is intended for detailed porcelain gres work, including flush buttons, inspection hatches, and other pieces requiring finished radii.

It is a finishing tool, not a substitute for accurate layout, controlled initial cutting, or checking the finished opening.
