How to Polish Porcelain Tile Edges with the Proxxon WP/A + Distar CoolPAD

Why Edge Finishing Makes or Breaks a Premium Tile Installation

You've made the cut. The porcelain is sized perfectly. But the edge is rough, micro-chipped, or dull — and on a high-end installation, that's not acceptable. Whether you're polishing freshly cut tile edges before installation or restoring the surface of installed tile, the Proxxon WP/A Cordless Angle Polisher paired with the Distar CoolPAD diamond polishing pads gives you a complete 4-step system to go from rough-cut to mirror-smooth — cordlessly, anywhere on the job site.

This guide covers both scenarios: polishing cut edges before installation, and surface restoration on installed tile. For the cutting steps that come before polishing, see Cutting, Grinding, and Polishing Porcelain Tile for Seamless 45° Corners and How to Cut Perfect 45° Miter Edges on Porcelain Tile (No Grinding Required).

What You'll Need

Why the Proxxon WP/A?

The WP/A is purpose-built for controlled polishing work on tile and stone. Its low-profile head and variable speed make it ideal for edge work where a full-size polisher would be unmanageable.

  • 10.8V cordless platform — same battery as the LHW/A grinder and IBS/A rotary tool; no extra charger needed if you're already in the Proxxon system
  • Variable speed — dial in the right RPM for each polishing step without overheating the pad or tile surface
  • Compact head — reaches tight spots, inside corners, and narrow edge profiles that a standard polisher can't access
  • Hook & loop pad mount — CoolPAD pads attach and swap in seconds between steps

Understanding the Distar CoolPAD 4-Step System

The CoolPAD system uses progressively finer diamond abrasive pads to take a rough-cut porcelain edge from coarse to mirror-polished in four steps. Each step removes the scratch pattern left by the previous one, building toward a flawless finish.

  • Step 1 (Coarsest) — Removes saw marks, chips, and rough texture from the cut edge. Aggressive material removal.
  • Step 2 — Smooths the surface left by Step 1. Begins to refine the edge profile.
  • Step 3 — Fine polishing. The edge starts to develop sheen and clarity.
  • Step 4 (Finest) — Mirror finish. Brings out the full gloss of the porcelain surface.

Key rule: Never skip steps. Each pad is calibrated to remove the scratch pattern of the previous grit. Jumping from Step 1 to Step 3 leaves subsurface scratches that will show in the final finish.

Scenario A: Polishing Cut Tile Edges Before Installation

This is the most common use case — polishing the edge of a freshly cut porcelain tile before it goes on the wall or floor.

Setup

  1. Secure the tile on a stable, non-slip work surface with the cut edge accessible.
  2. Attach the Step 1 CoolPAD to the WP/A using the hook & loop backing.
  3. Have your spray bottle of clean water ready.

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Mist the edge with water — lightly wet the cut edge before each step. The CoolPAD is designed for dry use but a light mist reduces heat and extends pad life on dense porcelain.
  2. Step 1 — Coarse pass — Set the WP/A to medium speed. Hold the pad flat against the cut edge and work in smooth, overlapping passes along the full length of the edge. Apply light, consistent pressure. 2–3 passes is typically sufficient to remove saw marks.
  3. Wipe and inspect — Wipe the edge clean with a dry cloth and check that all saw marks and chips are removed before moving to Step 2.
  4. Step 2 — Medium pass — Swap to the Step 2 pad. Repeat the same motion at slightly lower speed. 2–3 passes.
  5. Step 3 — Fine pass — Swap to Step 3. Reduce speed further. The edge should begin to develop a visible sheen after this step.
  6. Step 4 — Mirror finish — Swap to Step 4. Use the lowest comfortable speed. Work slowly and evenly. The edge should now have a full gloss finish matching the tile face.
  7. Final wipe — Clean the edge with a damp cloth, then dry. Inspect under good light for any remaining dull spots.

Pro Tips for Cut Edge Polishing

  • Keep the pad flat — tilting the pad concentrates pressure on one edge of the pad and creates uneven polishing.
  • Work the full edge length — short strokes leave transition marks. Long, overlapping passes give a consistent finish.
  • Don't rush Step 1 — thorough coarse polishing makes every subsequent step faster and easier.
  • Check pad wear — CoolPAD pads last for many tiles, but a worn Step 1 pad won't remove saw marks effectively. Replace when cutting action diminishes.

Scenario B: Surface Restoration on Installed Tile

The WP/A + CoolPAD system also works for restoring gloss on installed porcelain tile that has become dull from foot traffic, cleaning chemicals, or surface scratches.

Key Differences from Edge Polishing

  • Start at Step 2 or 3 for light surface dulling — you don't need the aggressive Step 1 unless there are deep scratches or etching.
  • Work in sections — polish one tile at a time in overlapping circular motions rather than linear passes.
  • Protect grout lines — keep the pad centered on the tile face and avoid grinding grout joints.
  • Clean thoroughly between steps — wipe away all residue before moving to the next pad to avoid cross-contamination of grits.

Surface Restoration Process

  1. Clean the tile surface thoroughly — remove all dirt, grease, and cleaning product residue before polishing.
  2. Assess the damage — light dulling starts at Step 3; moderate scratches start at Step 2; deep scratches or etching start at Step 1.
  3. Work through the remaining steps in sequence to the final mirror finish.
  4. Buff with a clean dry cloth after Step 4 to reveal the full gloss.

Pad Care & Maintenance

  • Rinse pads after use — rinse under clean water and allow to air dry before storing.
  • Store flat — don't stack pads face-down on abrasive surfaces.
  • Keep steps separate — label or store each step separately to avoid using the wrong grit.
  • Inspect before use — a glazed or loaded pad won't polish effectively; replace when performance drops.
